  • Overhanging Roof: Ensure a roof overhang extending at least 1.5 to 2 inches over the front to shade the entrance and deflect driving rain.

3. Recommended Materials & Finishing Guidelines

Selecting durable, non-toxic materials ensures your birdhouse withstands years of outdoor exposure safely:

  • Lumber Selection: Use solid, untreated lumber that is at least 3/4-inch thick (such as 1×6 or 1×8 boards) to provide adequate thermal insulation. Naturally rot-resistant species like Western Red Cedar, Redwood, or Cypress are ideal choices. Avoid pressure-treated wood due to chemical preservatives.

  2. Drill Entrance & Vent Holes: Use a sharp hole saw or Forstner bit to drill the entrance hole on the front panel. Drill floor drainage holes and score fledgling ladder grooves on the front interior face.
  3. Assemble Frame: Secure side panels to the backboard using exterior screws and glue, ensuring squared joints. Attach the base recessed by 1/4 inch to prevent moisture wicking.
  4. Install Clean-Out Side & Roof: Fix the hinged side cleaning door with a secure latch. Attach the sloped roof with a generous overhang over the front.
  5. Mounting: Attach the completed nest box to a dedicated metal pole or post equipped with a predator baffle for maximum protection.
